Sensei Alan Johnston of the Gravesend club has been practising for over 50 years, and teaching for 30 years of that.

When did you start Ki Aikido?
I started Ki Aikido as a Youth in 1974 when I was 14, at the East Kilbride club in Scotland under Sensei Matt Tenant.
What made you want to try Ki Aikido?
I was bullied severely at school every day. I went to different martial art clubs but they were full. I was pleased that when I went to try Aikido, they had availability.
What do you enjoy most about practice?
As I have matured with age, I enjoy most the development of Ki. However, in my younger days, I loved doing and ukemi-ing (receiving my partner’s throw) for all of the Aikido techniques.
How do you benefit from Aikido off of the mat?
I have a very stressful job, yet by using the principles of Ki Aikido it helps me be much more relaxed in my daily life.
