When did you start Ki Aikido?

I started as a Junior member in 2024. As I’m now fourteen, I’m a Youth member of the St. Albans club (soon to be a member of the new Clacton club).

What made you want to try Ki Aikido?

My Mum encouraged me to try it.

What do you enjoy most about practice?

Spending time with Mum on the mat. Mum is opening a club in Clacton, so she will also be my teacher in 2026.

How do you benefit from Ki Aikido off the mat?

I am shy and can struggle communicating and socialising with people I do not know. Aikido truly helps me with this by developing my confidence on and off the mat.

Describe Aikido in 3 words

Love, Happy, Free.

What is your favourite exercise/technique?

My favourite technique so far is 1st form Sankyo. Especially taking my partner to the ground and immobilising them. However, I have many more techniques to learn.

What is the greatest lesson aikido has taught you?

I started as a junior and when doing my first two yellow stripes, I was too shy to let the other club members watch my grading. Recently I faced this fear at Headquarters and passed my yellow belt with many people watching. This was a massive step forward for me.

What advice do you have for anyone thinking about trying Aikido?

Try it to see if you like it. If you do you will learn some incredible moves to help with your safety.
