Sensei Ben Docherty started young, and set up the Edinburgh Ki Aikido club 10 years ago. At 33 years old, he’s probably the youngest 5th Dan in the federation.
When did you start Ki Aikido?
I started Ki Aikido in 1999 when I was 7 years old.
What made you want to try Ki Aikido?
My friends from school tried Aikido but they said it had no fighting in it so it was rubbish……….I said no fighting – this means it’s great!
Was starting Aikido so young beneficial for you?
Yes. When you are young your mind soaks up information. By the time I reached Youth level, the movements were engrained.
What do you enjoy most about practice?
Working with other people and being thrown as a uke.
How do you benefit from Aikido off of the mat?
I benefit both mentally and physically off the mat from doing aikido.
Physically Aikido keeps me feeling loose and the joints flowing. I play a lot of sport that can tighten my muscles, and Aikido counteracts this.
Mentally Ki Aikido helps me remain calm and relaxed in stressful situations.
Describe Aikido in 3 words
Calm, Connection, Flow.
What is your favourite exercise and technique?
My favourite exercise is jigotai (horse-riding stance) and technique is 11th form Ikkyo.
Whst is the greatest lesson Ki Aikido has taught you?
Physicality does not work!
What advice do you have for people who want to try Ki Aikido?
Have an open mind and don’t overthink it.
