Aikido is more than just a martial art—it is a journey of self-discovery, balance, and harmony. In this poem, I reflect on why I took up Aikido and the transformative impact it has had on my life. From its graceful movements to its profound lessons in resilience and peace, Aikido has taught me not only how to defend but also how to grow—physically, mentally, and spiritually. This poem captures the essence of that journey, from the questions that first drew me to the mat, to the ongoing learning that continues even as a teacher. As you read, I invite you to step into the flowing path of Aikido and discover its wisdom for yourself.
My friend and published author, John Biggam, worked with me to create the following poem…
Why do I step upon this mat,
To this form of gentle combat?
In circles soft, my movements flow,
A calmness guides my hand.
With balance taught, my body grows,
And learns to firmly stand.
The strikes and throws, the graceful spins,
Are not for harm or war.
They show the strength that lies within,
To harm or hurt no more.
My spirit finds its centre still,
A quiet, boundless peace.
Through practice, patience bends my will,
And lets the chaos cease.
The falling teaches how to rise,
The yielding builds my might.
Through rolling earth and open skies,
I learn the way of light.
When danger looms, I feel no fear,
I’m grounded, calm, and clear.
With every move, I grow aware,
And banish doubt and fear.
The confidence to calmly face
The storms life throws my way,
Brings harmony and boundless grace
To meet each fading day.
Aikido shows the world as one,
Where all things come to blend.
The battles fought, the fears undone,
A peace that knows no end.
And now I stand where teachers stood,
I learn again, as teachers should.
